Downton Abbey DVD – Captures A Splendid Gem Of A TV Series
A few months ago I was in search of a good television drama to watch over the summer months. One day, while looking through my online journal community, I came across a post from one of the people on my friends list. She was going on and on about some show she’d been watching called ‘Downton Abbey’.
I am a huge fan of English Period Dramas so this sparked my interest. After doing a little bit of research on the Internet there was little doubt that I’d enjoy the series. Thus began my search for Downton Abbey DVDs. Since Downton Abbey is available in both DVD and Blu-ray, I had no problem finding what I was looking for and ordered the first season immediately.
When the Downton Abbey DVD arrived I was ecstatic. I couldn’t wait to settle in after the kids went to bed to start watching. The first episode did not disappoint. Downton Abbey is potentially one of the very best TV dramas ever made and the list of Emmy nominations will attest to that. What really impresses me is how well they’ve managed to blend the lives of the Crawley’s and their servants. Upstairs or downstairs, there’s never a dull moment at Downton Abbey.
There’s a little something for everyone on this show. For those who enjoy Edwardian period dramas there’s lots of English tradition. For those who are looking for humor there’s the outrageously outspoken Dowager Countess (mother of the Earl), and for those who enjoy a little romance… well, there’s lots of that.
In addition to the wonderful storyline, there’s an amazing list of characters that
you will surely fall in love with. Set in the period leading up to the beginning of the first World War, you’ll first meet the Earl and Countess of Grantham who, through an unfortunate event, have lost the heir to their estate. Next in line, Matthew Crawley, a young man from the working class, who just happens to be the third cousin to the Earl and the new heir. Matthew finds himself thrust into a world he knows very little about and is unsure he even wants to. There’s also a certain hope or expectation that Matthew will marry the Crawley’s oldest daughter, Mary, which becomes one of the major storylines for the series.
Meanwhile, the downstairs brings its own brand of drama as we delve into the lives and relationships of the servants. Whether it’s the conniving ways of the Lady’s Maid, or the forbidden romance of the Head Housemaid and Valet, there’s never a dull moment. If you enjoy a more mature brand of affection you’ll love the romantic tension between the Housekeeper and Butler, Mrs. Hughs and Mr. Carson.
Now that I have seen all of season one, I am going through withdrawals. I can only hope that they will release the Downton Abbey DVDs for season two as soon as possible. In the meantime, I suppose I have no choice but to start a re-watch.
